Electric Season: Power in NYCBL Western Division 1st Place
The Niagara Power hold onto the NYCBL’s Western Division first place position with a record of 24 wins, 9 losses, and 1 tie with 8 games remaining in the regular season.
The past few weeks of games displayed a variety of ways to win—from Adam Purdy’s June 29th walk off double against Hornell to a dominant double header sweep of Olean on July 6th that featured 19 total strikeouts.
The Power are currently on schedule to break the program record for most wins in a single season and secure a spot in the NYCBL playoffs beginning on July 22nd.
On July 8th , the 5 Niagara Power players selected as 2019 NYCBL All-Stars played at Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls, New Jersey. Because the team boasted the best overall record going into All Star weekend, the Power coaching staff was also selected to lead the NYCBL’s squad of stars.
In Monday’s game Canisius College’s Joe Barberio had his second All-Star start. Kent State University’s Eric Wentz also started. Other members of the Power who were selected and took part in the All-Star competition against the opposing ACBL team were NCCC pitcher Eric Johnson, outfielder Adam Purdy, and Barton College infielder Noah Almond.
Currently in the NYCBL’s rankings, Eric Wentz (Kent State) is 4th in batting average and 6th in runs scored. Noah Almond (Barton College) and Frank Lucska (Madonna University) are tied for 3rd in total homeruns.
Nathan Hinkley (Keystone College) is leading the team in earned run average at .65, with Canisius College’s Andrew Fron behind him at 1.2. Barberio (Canisius College) has an ERA of 1.73 and leads the team in strikeouts at 28 total.
In addition to a powerful on-field presence, the Power have made their mark off the field in their community as well. Players and coaches of the Power have volunteered with the Miracle League in Grand Island where children and adults who are differently abled physically and mentally play on a wheelchair accommodated field in an inclusive environment. Pictures from the Power’s volunteering experience can be found on their Facebook page.
On July 16th the Power will host a Season ticket holder appreciation night sponsored by Cornerstone Community Financial Credit Union. Throughout the last week of regular season games, stay tuned for discounts, giveaways and updates on potential playoff games at Sal Maglie Stadium.
